Frequently Asked Questions

What is included?

Your Safety

Safety is of upmost importance to us, We will provide you with all the knowledge, guidance and appropriate equipment you need for a safe day out on the water. If you want to know it just ask, We will not let you go out on the water until you are entirely happy.

River Conduct

You must be aware of other harbour users and give way where appropriate. I.e if its bigger than you, you should probably stay out of its way.

Buoyancy aids must be worn at all times, if we find you without one we will escort you off the water.

No lewd or loud conduct, The estuary is a family friendly area and bad behaviour will not be tolerated by us or the harbour master.

No littering, if its yours then you need to take it with you. Brownie points are awarded for those that pick up litter.

Age & restrictions

At least one of your group needs to 18 years of age or over, there is no upper age limit. You will need to reasonably fit to enjoy paddling. We recommend a 1-1 ratio for children under eight in kayaks, for small children it is possible to sit an extra seat in our double sit in kayaks to make it a three seater.

Children on Paddle boards need to have a legal guardian to be in full supervision at all times.

Abilities & Weight

We have never turned anyone away, you need to be confident you can do it. If your weight is over 16 stone and you wish to go in a kayaking its best that you take a double sit on top kayak.

Arrival Time

Please arrive to us prompt and on time. Cornish roads can be busy during the summer months. It is worth aiming to be 15-30 minutes early. Booked time slots for hires can not be changed and Guided trips leave on time with the tide.

Will you get wet?

when you are out on the water you run the risk of getting wet. It is unlikely to that you will capsize but it is inevitable that you will get splashed with water. We always recommend bringing a spare change of clothes to change in to once you are back in fowey.

Preparing Yourself

Boat Hire - there is plenty of room on board to store belongings, its worth bringing extra jackets or jumpers to stay warm if the weather changes.

Kayaking - casual clothes are ideal, trainers or sandals are best. If the weather is showery then a waterproof top. Bring spare clothes so that you have something to change into at the end as you will get damp. Wetsuits and dry bags are available to hire for an extra charge.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding - You will get wet. Wetsuit or swim gear is essential or at the very least a change of clothes. We do have wetsuits that are available to hire or purchase.

Guided River Expeditions - Casual clothes are ideal. Shorts or a tracksuit would be very suitable. Canvas or deck shoes, are best, not Wellingtons. If the weather is showery then a waterproof top (which can serve as a windproof) is useful. A spare sweater in a plastic bag (to keep it dry) can be taken with you, as it can become cold on the river.

Your Valuables

Dry bags can be hired on all self hires, or you can leave spare clothes and important things like car keys with us to look after for you in our boathouse or activity centre.

Guided River Expeditions - There is a limited amount of room available in a dry box on board the safety boat for your belongings.

We will do our upmost to look after your belongings when in our care and we have never had a problem before, but you do so at your own risk and we except no liability for missing or damaged items.

What happens if we have to close due to bad weather?

This is VERY rare we operate in sheltered waters. If we have to close due to extreme weather (rough seas or prolonged high winds) we will notify you via text early in the morning or the night before when possible. Make sure you provide a valid mobile phone number when booking. We will try to move your activity to another date to suit. But if this is not possible, we will refund any monies paid.

Going afloat on your own or odd group Numbers.

If you wish to travel solo self hire we can set an return time so we can raise the alarm if you are late. Please carry a mobile phone so we can reach you and you can reach us if are delayed, you can also can raise the alarm in the event of an emergency. Be aware that only Orange and O2 networks are available in Fowey.

Guided River Expeditions - we need a minimum of 4 people to run a tour so please contact us before booking. We have a limited amount of single kayaks available and they are used on a first come first served basis, in some cases you may be required to join someone in a double kayak.

What Equipment do we use?

Boats - We use industry standard safety boats Rigiflex, extremely stable, robust and unsinkable. With a 2015 Tothatsu engine they are very easy to drive [or helm as we say in the trade].

Kayaks - We have a large range of perception sit in and sit on top kayaks in both double or single seat.

We primarily use sit in open cockpit kayaks on guided expeditions and sit on top kayaks as our hire fleet. If you wish to you use a specific type, please contact us before your arrival as our fleets are at opposite ends of town.

Stand Up Paddle Boards - our brand new range of high end paddle boards were provided by Bic Sup and are solid boards so we don't have to worry about punctures. We have either the large Yoga boards suitable for all sizes or the junior boards for those under 9 stone.

Crew Saver or Yak Buoyancy aids are our preferred choice. They are mandatory, ensure that your jacket is in good shape and properly adjusted.

Boat Moorings

Half day and full day boat hires do not have to worry about mooring fees as boats are returned to their moorings overnight. Landing pontoons and quays are free to use.

Week long hire’s are able to use the shore linked pontoons at Fowey & Polruan without charge as long as the boats are used every 24hrs. We can also arrange frape moorings at Mixtow and Lerryn with no charge. If you are staying in a property that includes a mooring we happy for you to use it as long as you inform us of its location.

If you wish to use other area’s of fowey harbour then you may have to pay the relevant harbour dues.
